Maths

In mathematics we encourage children to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, reason mathematically and solve problems. Maths is made up of the following areas:

• Number and place value
• Number operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
• Fractions, decimals, percentages, ration and proportion, algebra
• Measurement
• Geometry – properties of shape, position and direction
• Statistics

Mathematics is taught daily and where appropriate within other subjects so that links can be made to consolidate learning and transfer skills.

Calculation Policies for EYFS - Year 6

Please click on the link below to read the Calculation Policy for each year group in school. These useful documents show how we, as a school, teach addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to the children and they can be used as a reference point for families.

Each year group policy outlines the vocabulary used throughout the different year groups and how we teach the calculation method from using equipment (concrete apparatus), to representing the working out pictorially through to the abstract.

SMIRFS

Welcome to the SMIRFs, Space Mission Instant Recall Facts.

SMIRFs is a mental maths learning journey based around the theme of Space, where, starting at the astronaut selection programme, children progress through the planets of the Solar System to the Milky Way with increasing challenge for each step.

The ‘ideas’ link gives children different ways in which they can develop and self-assess their understanding of the planet they are working through.

If you have any queries about any aspects of SMIRFs or supporting your child with their learning, then please do not hesitate to speak to the class teacher.
